Bora Bora Trip Cost Breakdown
As recapping our trip to Bora Bora and Moorea comes to an end, I’ve been getting a number of emails asking how much one should budget for a trip here. Just like anywhere you may go, there are a lot of factors to consider when determining your budget – length of stay, how you will eat, what you will do – excursions, spa, etc.
There are also a number of cost-saving tips that if I didn’t take into consideration, we’d be paying a lot more than we did…
- Exchange Rate
When we first booked our trip, the exchange rate SUCKED. A couple of months later, it got tremendously better. So when it did, even though it was still really early, we purchased our currency. One can never really predict these rates, and they change daily. So we figured why risk them going back up if we’re happy with the current rate. So when it got REALLY GOOD, much better than we had originally planned for, we took the plunge and got ALL of our money. In fact, we had a balance due to one of the hotels, to be paid one month prior to our arrival, but had them charge us two months earlier, because I wanted to get the current rate. Just doing this with the hotel alone ended up saving us over $400 on the room, not including what we saved getting our currency when we did.
- Credit Cards
When booking and paying balances it’s super helpful to use a credit card that offers no foreign transaction fee.
|Airfare (Roundtrip NYC to Tahiti)||$3,151.90|
|Airfare for Inter-island flights (Tahiti-Moorea-Bora Bora)
(We obviously ended up taking the ferry from Tahiti to Moorea. After this post, Air Tahiti pushed our flight back yet again!). Not wanting to wait what would be now a 6+ hour layover for a ten minute flight, we opted for the ferry. We were not charged a cancellation fee for the one flight, but when we asked if they could cancel the rest of our flights so we could re-book at the cheaper, one-way rates, they would not do it for us.)
|Four Seasons Bora Bora(1 night in this room, 3 nights in this room)||$6,700.72|
|Transportation, Excursions, Food & Other Incidentals, such as:
– Taxi from Tahiti airport to ferry terminal
– Ferry from Tahiti to Moorea
– Hilton Moorea Hotel Other Expenses (Food/Drink, Wi-Fi, transportation to/from the hotel).
– ATV excursion + Tip
– Four Seasons Hotel Other Expenses (Food/Drink, transfer to/from the airport, & couples massage at the spa)
– Coral Gardens, Shark & Stingray Safari on a Private Boat + Tip
– Jet Skiing + Tip
Truthfully, I thought the trip was going to end up being $5,000-6,000 more than what it ended up costing, especially considering where we stayed and what we did while there. However, with the right planning and hitting the exchange rate well, I think we did a fabulous job on cost, and came in under budget. While yes, it’s expensive, it’s not horrible considering the destination. I feel it was worth every penny. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
