Damnoen Saduak Floating Market Review
While in Bangkok, we wanted to be sure we ventured outside the city center. More importantly, we wanted to be sure we visited a floating market. They are all over the place here, with many to choose from, with the most popular being Damnoen Saduak floating market. Naturally, we selected this famous destination as the one to visit and review.
Visitors flock here early morning to shop while sitting in longboats. There are everyday items to buy – from spices to vegetables, all the way to souvenirs, as this has become a very popular tourist attraction over the years. Unfortunately, this means a lot of the shops nowadays sell cheap touristy items, but don’t let them fool you. Look for the diamond in the rough. There are a few good spots to buy “real” items, but you really have to search. For example, I didn’t want the elephant “carving” that was being sold at ten different places. I wanted something authentic and unique, not factory made to rip tourists off. We managed to find a great shop where a lady sat hand painting ceramic elephants and tea cups. A major score! There are also a lot of local artists painting things right in front of you, so be sure to look for them!
Shopping in a boat is such a neat experience. Josh and I got a kick out of the sticks that the local merchants have that are used to grab your boat and pull it towards them, of course in attempt to sell you their goods.
Visiting here is definitely a great experience, and a total must do (check out some other must-do’s while in Bangkok here)!
