Disney’s California Grill is one of my favorite on property signature restaurants! It’s hard to get reservations around Wishes time (Magic Kingdom’s fireworks), and it’s easy to see why. That view!
So truth be told, I’ve never had a desire to stay at Disney’s Contemporary Resort before, but since dining at California grill, I’ve since changed my tune. It’s ALL ABOUT THAT THEME PARK VIEW! However, it’s expensive, and I’m not sure if I could ever bring myself to shell out that kind of money for a room I’m barely in. We shall see.
Anyway, if you’re not a Contemporary Resort guest, the easiest way to get to Disney’s California Grill is to take either a Disney bus, ferry, or monorail to Disney’s Magic Kingdom.
From there, you can WALK.
There’s a lovely pathway that takes you around the perimeter of Magic Kingdom straight to the Contemporary Resort.
I find Disney’s Contemporary Resort completely intriguing because of it’s history. I mean, it’s Disney’s flagship hotel first and foremost, not to mention, it was built and then assembled by individually placing the hotel rooms into the shell. Crazy!
The one thing that hasn’t had me running to stay here is the inside. It’s not super attractive. While the fact that the monorail runs through the hotel gives it MAJOR wow factor, the decor itself is pretty blah.
Nevertheless, this resort is home to some fabulous restaurants, mainly, California Grill, which is located on the very top floor. Of course, we were a little late for our reservation because I spotted these plates (below) and had to stop. How freakin’ cute!!
We actually had a pretty horrible experience checking in, but as bad as the check in desk crew was, the waitstaff and food totally made up for it!
What sets this place apart from most Disney restaurants is the fabulous view. From your table. While you eat. I mean, WOW!
There’s also a balcony. Enough said. If that’s not the most perfect place to watch the sunset than I don’t know what is.
This is also THE prime Wishes viewing spot, hands down. Even if you don’t dine around Wishes, don’t worry. Just keep your receipt and you can easily return when it’s time for the show. This makes the balcony crowded, so be sure to get there early! It’s something you do NOT want to miss, especially since this is one of the restaurants that pipes in the Wishes music!
We ate slow, because we didn’t want to have to leave and then come back, and we were dining right around that “iffy” time (our reservation was for 7:35 – we were probably seated close to 8, and fireworks were at 10pm). It worked out AMAZINGLY. We each started with a salad and then shared the three-meat signature meatballs.
For main course we each had the Oak-fired Filet Of Beef, and then the pictures stopped because of this:
Drinks. Lots of them.
Josh kept his beers flowing and that entire bottle of wine? Finished by yours truly. Seriously though, it was SUCH a fun, delicious meal! We laughed, stuffed our faces, and I remember at the end of our dinner Josh secured a place on the balcony for Wishes, while I signed some sort of bill.
He really snagged THE most perfect location on the balcony. I was in AWE.
What a great night, and definitely a Disney restaurant you don’t want to miss!
