Looking for something fun to do in Boston in the winter? The New England Aquarium is a great option. There’s a giant fish tank with multiple levels, and its a unique sight for sure!
The first thing visitors will see are penguins, and it’s one of the coolest penguin exhibits we’ve ever seen.
Maybe it’s because there’s no glass between you and them, but they’re so close!
The penguins are the cool factor here – them and the sheer size of the fish tank. Outside, there’s an open-air sea lion exhibit (we didn’t brave the cold to go see it), as well as opportunities to embark on a whale watching cruise (for an additional fee).
However, I will say, and maybe it’s because we didn’t get to go outside, the aquarium itself felt a bit small. Still, a great indoor activity in the winter!
There is a really nice array of fish, though. My favorite was the gigantic octopus.
Baby A loved the turtles.
The tank is open at the very top, so be sure you head up to check that out!
Admission is pricey at $27.95 per adult. Under 3 is free. 3-11 is $18.95. So expensive, and honestly I wouldn’t say it’s necessary worth the high price. I mean, that’s a lot. Strollers are allowed pretty much everywhere, and the whole aquarium is very accessible. I could see it getting very crowded during peak times.
I don’t know much about the parking options. We took the train (blue line) from our hotel, which was extremely easy. Baby A LOVED the train. Maybe just as much as the aquarium. Of course now whenever we take a train anywhere she thinks we are going to see fish.
We saw the entire aquarium in about an hour. I don’t think you need more than 2, especially if you’re not doing the IMAX movie, or going outside (and in winter, it’s COLD since the aquarium is right on the water).
The restaurant here is the Harbor View Cafe, which looks like it has amazing views, but we unfortunately didn’t dine here during our trip, and I can’t remember why haha.
There are a lot of restaurants and hotels within walking distance from the aquarium, and the blue line stop is literally across the street. The New England Aquarium is a great place to spend a winter’s day in Boston. I can only imagine how beautiful it must be in the warmer months, since it’s right on the water. We unfortunately didn’t get to take in any of the views, since we were there on THE coldest day of the year.
