The Italian Riviera is picture perfect, and was a stop on our Mediterranean Cruise. Our goal for the day was to hike to Portofino from Santa Margherita Ligure, which was quite the task. See?
It took me a while to “work up” the energy to do this, so we spent the morning strolling around the small city of Santa Margherita, with nowhere to go. We took in the beautiful architecture and laid back Italian culture. It was perfect.
By afternoon, I agreed to do this (dreaded) hike. I read it’s something you have to do, because it’s so beautiful. Josh grabbed a map and we set off.
The entire route curved along the coastline, which was slightly annoying, as every time we thought we were almost there, there’d be another curve.
Nevertheless, it was fun, not to mention stunning, running into small towns on the way. It made the experience all the more adventurous!
Because most of the route hugged the coast, we saw a ton of tiny beachfronts.
See our ship in the back? Look how far we’ve walked so far!
However, we still have a ways to go…
This walking thing was no joke, and it was SO HOT. How do you like my rolled up capris look?
More curves coming up ahead!
Eventually, the “path” left the coast and lead us up and into the mountains. What is it about Italy? Even the woods are prettier!
And then, we saw this:
I can see why everyone who has done this hike says it’s a must do.
I’m now a believer. I mean, just look at this – probably the most gorgeous view I’ve ever seen.
We also passed a ton of villas on our walk. Maybe one day, one of those villas will be ours (I can dream, right?!).
Even Josh was checking out the real estate!
Eventually, we came down from the hills and walked straight into Portofino…
The tiny town of Portofino is stunning. I know I’m using this word a lot, but really, there’s no other way to describe it. From the gorgeous buildings, to the amazing shopping, and the smells! Oh the smells! The aroma of mouth watering Italian food is the best thing I’ve ever smelled in my life. I’m destined to be fat.
Are you loving my tan line from this trip?! So annoying!
Amazing scenery, amazing shopping, amazing food, and absolutely amazing gelato!
I realize we are absolutely hot messes in the above pictures. However, in my defense, It. Was. Delicious. I would do that hike all over again for the gelato alone. It was that good.
Instead of walking all the way back to Santa Margherita, we took the ferry, which made me one happy girl.
Here we are approaching Santa Margherita from the ferry (above). Time to head back on the ship and straight to the spa! I needed a massage after that hike, but I would do it again in a heartbeat! A memory to last a lifetime for sure!
