“Only here among the crowds can you find rest nestled up above the park deep in the city.”
If you’re anything like us, we hate leaving our dogs when we travel. They’re a part of our family and we miss them when they’re not around. The idea of leaving them sometimes makes me not even want to go.
Recently, we were feeling worn out from work, and wanted to get away for the weekend. We didn’t have time to go far, and decided on a simple getaway in our very own backyard – NYC. A staycation at its best.
We didn’t want to leave the boys behind either, so we searched for pet friendly accommodations, which isn’t hard to find in New York City. We ended up with The Surrey, a boutique hotel on the Upper East Side. We loved its small, luxury feel, as well as its proximity to Central Park, which is perfect for dogs!
Located on a quiet, side street, away from the hustle and bustle that Manhattan’s famous for, The Surrey is exactly what we were looking for. Plus, the ever so delicious Cafe Boulud is located just off the lobby!
And our dogs? They loved it! Not only were they on their best behavior, but they were clearly born to travel. They ate up the attention!
Inside the hotel is just as gorgeous and luxurious as the outside. Best of all, are the rooms! They are well appointed, and large for NYC standards.
I love when hotels welcome guests with something delicious, and The Surrey didn’t disappoint on that end!
Since The Surrey is pet friendly, I guess we should see what Davinci and Oliver thought?
Yep, I’d say this place is pet approved!
The Surrey is a total gem in the sky! And speaking of sky, be sure to check out their stunning rooftop terrace – and grab a few cocktails while you’re up there. It was definitely a favorite spot of ours!
Oliver was so excited to be in a new place! He wanted to go wherever Davinci was, but Davinci didn’t want to be anywhere near him. So that was fun.
Like I said above, the hotel’s proximity to Central Park is fantastic. Not only was it a quiet, lovely setting, but it made for walking the dogs a breeze!
We stayed for a couple of nights to take advantage of NYC’s great restaurants and activities, such as dinner at The Plaza.
And no matter what we did each day, we loved having our boys there!
Funny story about Davinci. He LOVED the bed (as you can tell from the pictures). It was a task to get him to leave! And I agree with him, it was a comfortable bed! However, we soon noticed he wasn’t eating. At first, we thought maybe it was because of the unfamiliar setting. He is weird like that. Then, as we watched him more and more, he didn’t seem uncomfortable at all. In fact, he seemed too comfortable. Even when it was time to go out and do something, we’d have to pick him up off the bed. Once he was out of the room he was fine, but in the room, he wanted nothing else but to be on that damn bed. As soon as we’d return each day, he’d head straight back to the bed. However, he obviously needs to eat, which he wasn’t. So, we decided to try something – we brought the food to him on the bed. He gobbled it up! My lazy dog just didn’t want to get off the damn bed to bother eating. Now that’s taking room service to a whole new level!
Each morning, I woke to find Josh getting ready and Oliver watching cartoons. Just like at home.
When it was time for me to get up, Davinci, just like when we’re at home, immediately took my spot.
Another place we visited is the Met (obviously without the dogs). We had no worries about leaving them – The Surrey truly is pet friendly. While most “pet friendly” hotels require you to lock up your pets when you leave, The Surrey won’t hear of it! They gave us a special tag to place on the door, letting them know there are pets inside. When we returned each day, the front desk would inform us how housekeeping had a blast playing with the boys as they made up our room. The staff was absolutely wonderful! I can’t
Another dinner highlight was Morton’s Steakhouse. It’s a great restaurant to go to before catching a Broadway show, which is exactly what we did!
Staycations are awesome, and enjoying them as a family simply can’t be beat 🙂 .
